Huang Jiancheng’s Projects

the China Pavilion at Expo 2005, Aichi, Japan

The China Pavilion, of which Mr. Huang Jiancheng was the chief designer, was designed under the philosophy of Taoism of China, about the unity of nature and man, the return to nature, and the respect for nature. A dynamic, open, and three dimensional space was devised following a hyperbolic spiral pattern. It combined a feeling of quantity with traditional philosophies, and within the space, integrated the traditional humanistic philosophy of Tai Chi of limitless and the circle of life, with the pursuit oflife of Chinese people in modern times. The design space demonstrated anultimate understanding of the Chinese culture, and incorporated Chinese traditional philosophies into modern technologies. It intended the design spaceas an inseparable whole, and emphasized the alternation between sequences. Theatmosphere of the environment was the focus of the design, showing subtlety andharmony, giving the space life, soul, and philosophical thinkings, regardingthe universe, the nature, the humanity, and the life.

The China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo in 2010

The China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo in 2010 was composed of five theme exhibitions, namely,One Cinema, One Painting Scroll, One Paddy Field, One Experience, and One Plaza. TheFootprints in the Orient explained, in its 49-meter high core exhibition area, the ideas and wisdom behind urban development. In the 41-meter high experience exhibition area, theExpedition of Searching demonstrated to us the wisdom behind urban architecture. In the 33-meter high functional exhibition area, the Booming Cities showcased the wisdom behind the city life. The underlying theme behind all these exhibitions was to exemplify Chinese wisdom in urban development, from an oriental perspective, with searching as the thread, the exploration in an oriental style for wisdom behind urban development as the vessel of expression. It embodied the nation’sideology of building on yesterdays for tomorrows, in a search for paths of development, for wisdom of the past, to open up a harmonious future, and to epitomize the ideal of cities that makes life better.
